Meet Our Booking Manager: Ruth Leaver
Ruth is GirlsTrek’s longest standing employee. She has worked with us for over seven years and we rely on her to keep the GT machine running smoothly. Ruth has also become a very capable guide and has been on just about every GirlsTrek trip on offer. We spoke to her about why she has stuck with us for so long and what she loves about the GirlsTrek culture.
How did you end up working for GirlsTrek?
I met Frith and her business partner because our kids were at kindy and primary school together. Before my children were born, I worked in banking, so Frith asked me to help them out with their book-keeping and admin on a part-time basis and the role grew from there.
Why do you love working here?
The flexibility that Frith affords me allows me to balance my family commitments. Frith is a mother too and understands that sometimes family has to come first – and I can work from home which is fabulous. When I am in the office the team works really well together. Everyone has a voice in this company, and we bounce ideas off one another to find the right solutions.
I also love the clients that GirlsTrek attracts. It is so rewarding seeing them take on challenges that they may have not thought they were up to – and achieving them. It’s just such a positive thing to be involved with. Over the years I have also seen so many new friendships formed as a result of travelling and training with GirlsTrek. Many of the girls have become lifelong friends.
You also wear the tour guide hat at times. Tell us about that.
I have always been very active. I wasn’t always a walker. I was into triathlons for many years before I had children, but I found the training too time consuming once they came along. Taking these trips is a different way of staying fit and I have been so fortunate to work and travel in so many places in Australia and around the world.
